In early 2017, the Old Boys’ Association (OBA) of Hameed Al Husseinie College, Colombo 12 dared to dream bigger than ever before. Their mission was audacious—purchase an 80-perch plot of land adjoining the school, a property valued at LKR 360 million and raise the entire sum in just nine months.
For many, it sounded unthinkable. Yet, two devoted alumni, Mohamed Buhary Mohamed Faizal and Kabeer Riffai Mohamed Akram, stepped into the arena with unshakable determination. Leading the OBA Land Committee, they rallied the strength of prominent business leaders and united the wider community under a single cause. What once seemed impossible transformed into a resounding victory. The land was secured. The achievement became legendary—etched into memory as the triumph of the “Land Heroes.”
But the story did not end there. That remarkable success sparked a greater vision. If unity could reclaim land for a school, why couldn’t the same spirit reclaim hope for an entire community of Colombo? From deep conversations and an unwavering pledge to serve humanity, a new Light was kindled—one that would extend far beyond the walls of a single institution.
Thus, Light for Life was born. On 13 March 2019, the vision took formal shape as a Company Limited by Guarantee under Section 32 of the Companies Act No. 7 of 2007. From its very first day, the mission was bold and uncompromising: to confront poverty with opportunity, to replace despair with dignity and to unlock the future through the power of education and hope.
A Colombo where learning opens doors, poverty is defeated and every person can build a brighter future.
Under the banner “Education for Gold,” we expand access to learning, foster holistic development and create real pathways to opportunity — so that families can rise above poverty and communities can thrive with dignity.
